Digital Oil Art Actions Turn You Into a Pro

There are no two ways about it: oil painting is a skill that takes time to master. 

But that doesn’t mean you can't start creating now.

Here are seven steps for creating digital oil art with Photoshop:

1. Open in Photoshop: If you don’t have a subscription to Photoshop, you can try it for free by clicking here.
   

2. Duplicate the background layer: Right-click the Background layer in the Layers panel and select Duplicate Layer. Name this layer "Base" and click OK.
   

3. Apply the Oil Paint filter: With the Base layer selected, go to Filter > Stylize > Oil Paint. Adjust the settings to achieve the desired oil painting effect and click OK.
   

4. Enhance the brush strokes: Create a new layer by going to Layer > New > Layer and name it "Brush Strokes". Use the Brush tool (B) with custom oil brushes to manually add and enhance strokes on this layer.
   

5. Add texture: Go to File > Place Embedded and choose a canvas texture file. Adjust the size as needed and place it over the entire image. Set the blending mode of this layer to Overlay or Soft Light and reduce the opacity to blend it with the artwork.
   

6. Adjust colors and tones: Select the Base layer, then go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels to create a levels adjustment layer. Adjust the sliders to enhance the contrast and colors of your artwork.
   

7. Make final adjustments: Create a new layer by going to Layer > New > Layer and name it "Final Touches". Use the Brush tool or other tools to add any final details and adjustments to your digital oil painting.

Trial and error is a big part of reaching perfection, but these foundational steps will set you on the right path.
