Today’s Tip:
A Glitch Text Effect is a Good Thing

Insight from Tuts+

In the gaming world, the word "glitch" strikes fear into the hearts of players. But in the design world, it’s embraced as a creative opportunity.

Photoshop makes it simple to impose a glitch effect on any text. Here’s how:

  1. Import your text: Open Photoshop and start a new project. Select the Type tool from the toolbar, click on your canvas, and type out the text you want to apply the glitch effect to. If you don’t have Photoshop, try it for free by clicking here.

  2. Customize your text settings: Adjust the font, size, and alignment of your text using the Character panel. Make sure your text is clear and easy to read, as the glitch effect will be more impactful on sharp, well-defined letters.

  3. Duplicate the text layer: Right-click on the text layer in the Layers panel and select Duplicate Layer. This allows you to create the glitch effect on one layer while keeping the original text intact for reference.

  4. Displace the text for a glitch effect: With the duplicated layer selected, go to Filter > Distort > Displace. Adjust the Horizontal and Vertical Scale to create the desired glitch effect.

  5. Add color distortion: Duplicate the displaced text layer twice, creating two additional layers. Change the blending mode of one layer to Screen and the other to Multiply. Then, offset these layers slightly by selecting each layer and using the arrow keys to nudge them left, right, up, or down.

  6. Introduce noise and lines: Create a new layer above your text and fill it with black. Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise, and adjust the amount to add a grainy texture. Change the blending mode of this layer to Screen and lower the opacity to create a subtle noise overlay. To add glitch lines, use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to select small horizontal areas of your text and nudge them left or right to create the appearance of broken, offset lines.

  7. Finalize the glitch effect: Convert your text layer to a Smart Object by right-clicking and selecting Convert to Smart Object. Apply a Gaussian Blur to soften the edges of the text slightly, then use the Liquify tool to push and pull parts of the text, creating a more organic glitch effect. Adjust the opacity and blending modes of your layers to refine the final appearance.
