It’s simple to create authentic digital sketches

Welcome back to Art Piece 👋

Another week, another tip, and another free Photoshop tool you can use to improve and inspire your digital creations.

Let’s dive in 🙌

Today’s Tip:
Scribble & Sketch Photo Effects Turn You Into a Pro

Insight from Envato Tuts+

Let’s face it: not everyone can scribble and sketch like a pro.

But don’t give up on your vision. There’s a solution: Photoshop.

You can use it to create authentic digital sketches that will mesmerize your audience and put a smile on your face.

Here are seven steps for getting started:

  1. Open Photoshop: If you don’t have a subscription to Photoshop, you can try it for free by clicking here.

  2. Open your photo in Photoshop: Go to File > Open, choose your photo, and click Open.

  3. Create brushes: Draw three scribbles on paper and scan them. If you drew all three scribbles on one sheet, use Photoshop’s selection tools to separate them into three individual files.

  4. Create the base layer: Go to Layer > New > Layer to create a new layer and name it "Base".

  5. Create a subject sketch: Select the Base layer, then go to Layer > New > Layer to create a new layer and name it "Scribble_Sketch_1". Use the scribble brushes you created to sketch over the subject.

  6. Reveal subject details: Control-click the Base layer thumbnail to make a selection. Select the Background layer, then go to Layer > New > Layer Via Copy to copy it onto a new layer.

  7. Add texture: Go to File > Place Embedded and choose the texture file. Set the Width and Height to 29.48% and name this layer "Texture".

  8. Make final adjustments: Select the Subject_Details_1 layer. Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves to create a new curves adjustment layer and name it "Overall Brightness".

That’s it. Those are the basics — but feel free to experiment with other features and elements to achieve the exact look you're aiming for.
